Laughing With

◊  Saint Afra, pray for us

A song by Regina Spektor (listen):

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God when
they’re starving or freezing or so very poor

No one laughs at God
when the doctor calls after some routine tests
No one’s laughing at God
     when it’s gotten real late
and their kid’s not back from their party yet

No one laughs at God
when their airplane starts to uncontrollably shake
No one’s laughing at God
when they see the one they love
     hand-in-hand with someone else
and they hope that they’re mistaken

No one laughs at God
when the cops knock on their door
and they say we got some bad news, sir
No one’s laughing at God
when there’s a famine or fire or flood

Chorus
But God can be funny
at a cocktail party when listening
to a good God-themed joke, or
Or when the crazies say He hates us
and they get so red in the head
you think they’re ‘bout to choke
God can be funny
when told He’ll give you money
if you just pray the right way
And when presented like a genie
     who does magic like Houdini
or grants wishes like Jiminy Cricket
     and Santa Claus
God can be so hilarious, ha ha

Ha ha

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
when they’ve lost all they got
and they don’t know what for

No one laughs at God
on the day they realize that the last sight
they’ll ever see is a pair of hateful eyes
No one’s laughing at God
     when they’re saying their goodbyes

chorus

No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one laughs at God in a hospital
No one laughs at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God in hospital
No one’s laughing at God in a war
No one’s laughing at God
when they’re starving or freezing or so very poor

No one’s laughing at God
No one’s laughing at God
No one’s laughing at God
We’re all laughing with God

Somebody Like You

◊  Saint Ignatius of Loyola, pray for us

If I had a theme song for this summer, it would be Keith Urban’s upbeat and bouncy, “Somebody Like You”. (Listen) The first stanza, especially the third line, is what caught my attention when I heard this song on the radio this morning. It is full of energy and joy. Except for the third line of the extended play stanza, the whole song applies, especially with its subtle allusion to You. The best love songs naturally apply to God too.

There’s a new wind blowing like I’ve never known
I’m breathing deeper than I’ve ever done
And it sure feels good to finally feel the way I do
Now I wanna love somebody, love somebody like you

And I’m letting go of all my lonely yesterdays
I’ve forgiven myself for the mistakes I’ve made
Now there’s just one thing, the only thing I wanna do
I wanna love somebody, love somebody like you

Yeah, I wanna feel the sunshine shining down on me and you
When you put your arms around me
You let me know there’s nothing in this world I can’t do

I used to run in circles going no where fast
I’d take one step forward and look two steps back
I couldn’t walk a straight line even if I wanted to
I wanna love somebody, love somebody like you

Whoa here we go now
Hey I wanna love you baby

Yeah, I wanna feel the sunshine shining down on me and you
When you put your arms around me
Well baby there ain’t nothing in this world I can’t do

Sometimes it’s hard for me to understand
But you’re teaching me to be a better man
I don’t want to take this life for granted like I used to do
I wanna love somebody, love somebody like you
I’m ready to love somebody, love somebody like you
And I wanna love somebody, love somebody like you (yeah)

Hey I wanna love you baby

(Extended play)

(oh yeah, whoa, oh yeah)
Oh, I wanna be the man in the middle of the night
Shinin’ like it’s true
I wanna be the man that you run to whenever I call on you
When everything that loved someone finally found it’s way
And I wanna be a better man
I see it in your face, yeah, yeah (yeah, yeah)
Hey I wanna love you baby

Note: The line, “When everything that loved someone finally found it’s way”, reminds me of the hope and final joy expressed in the wedding banquet from the Book of Revelation.

Brevity

◊  Saint Bridget of Sweden, pray for us

I recently rediscovered a rare moment of inspired creativity I had left as a comment to this article back in March, 2008, “No Resistance is Futile”.

The form of haiku—
Like banks of a river flows
Creativity

The point of the article, and the website too, is that limitations, restrictions, or boundaries narrows ones focus and fosters creativity. One often struggles and complains about boundaries and limitations, but it is this very struggle that develops the creative muscle needed to flourish within those walls. (An analogy seems to apply to prayer too.)

This reminds me of Twitter. A limitation of only 140 characters places a steep premium on the economy of words to convey an idea or to paint an image. People manage okay, but good story telling, or even poetry, is rare. I try.

The Journal is Back

◊  Saint Ambrose Aut-pert, pray for us

After considerable mulling over, I have decided to bring back the old CowPi Journal. (I hope to write about the reasons later.) All of the post from my You journal have been merged into this one. (Links should redirect here too.)

Lots of work still needs to be done. I haven’t yet decided on the design of the sidebar or the header, or even the footer. Somehow I need to incorporate the cowpi symbol into the new design. Also I need to fine tune the style sheets and formatting. For the few people that visit, please be patient with the changes.

Update: My apologies, but in case the server redirects do not work properly for the feeds/subscriptions, here are the correct links to the RSS and Atom feeds.
