In Hind’s Feet on High Places by Hannah Hurnard, there is a scene where Much Afraid is talking to the Shepherd about how her enemies were yelling at her and trying to distract her from the path up the mountains to the High Places. The Shepherd suggested that she sing when they start that business and then proceeded to teach her a new song.
Thursday evening, I was talking to a priest friend about things and this scene in the book came up. (I had given him a copy of Hind’s Feet back in the summer. It has become an excellent reference and metaphor for our discussions.) I told him that I preferred not to sing, and even if I did, I did not have a song of my own to sing.
Late Friday night, the song below came on the radio. Ironically the radio was tuned to a Christian radio station that I rarely listen to. I think I found a song for me for the moment. It is a journey song through the different stages of faith.
Weak and wounded sinner
Lost and left to die
O, raise your head, for love is passing by
Come to Jesus; Come to Jesus
Come to Jesus and liveNow your burden’s lifted
And carried far away
And precious blood has washed away the stain, so
Sing to Jesus; Sing to Jesus
Sing to Jesus and liveAnd like a newborn baby
Don’t be afraid to crawl
And remember when you walk
Sometimes we fall, so
Fall on Jesus; Fall on Jesus
Fall on Jesus and liveSometimes the way is lonely
And steep and filled with pain
So if your sky is dark and pours the rain, then
Cry to Jesus; Cry to Jesus
Cry to Jesus and liveOh and when the love spills over
And music fills the night
And when you can’t contain your joy inside, then
Dance for Jesus; Dance for Jesus
Dance for Jesus and liveAnd with your final heartbeat
Kiss the world goodbye
Then go in peace, and laugh on Glory’s side, and
Fly to Jesus; Fly to Jesus
Fly to Jesus and live— Chris Rice, “Untitled Hymn (Come To Jesus)”
