I know Jesus, and I talk to God,
And I remember this from when I was young:
Faith, hope, and love are some good things He gave us,
And the greatest is love.
— Alan Jackson, from That September Day
I was channel surfing a couple of weeks ago and caught two theologians on EWTN discussing the three theological virtues of faith, hope, and love. One of them said, “Of the three, only love will remain in heaven.”
Wow! That struck me as an odd thing to say. On our journey here on earth, faith and hope walk side-by-side with love. But on second thought, that does make sense. When you are in heaven, there is no more need of faith or hope because you are already there, next to God. You know the outcome. No more doubt. Everything is certain. Everything is perfected in heaven. Only love remains. And as St. Paul said, love is the greatest of these.
